Elective Credit Assistance

Students are encouraged to begin earning elective credits as early as possible to help reach the 50 elective credit requirement. There are several ways in which students can earn electives off campus through Peninsula High School:

Volunteering in the Community (Community Service) 12 hours = 1 credit
  • Non-profit organizations 501(c)3 (Boys and Girls Club, etc.)
  • Hospitals
  • Retirement Homes
  • Elementary Schools

Student must choose an approved site, get a contract signed by the site, and must keep a time sheet of the hours they volunteer. Hours should be turned in every six week grading period.

Off Campus Activities and Groups 12 hours = 1 credit
  • Club Sports (AYSO, etc.)
  • Organized Fitness Classes (Dancing, etc.)
  • Counseling/Therapy
  • AA or NA Meetings
  • Church Activities (bowling, etc.--not worship/prayer time)
Student must keep a time sheet of the hours involved in the activity. Hours should be turned in every six week grading period.
Paid Work Experience 36 hours = 1 credit
  • Jobs where student gets an actual paycheck stub with taxes deducted (Target, Sears, etc.)

Student must enroll through the Work Experience Coordinator at PHS in order to begin earning credit. Student must regularly turn in paycheck stubs and complete curriculum on a weekly basis related to job skills in order to earn credit.

Credits initially go toward the vocational education requirement, if needed, and then go into the elective credit bin.

ROP 1 Semester = 10 credits
  • Classes taken through the San Mateo County Regional Occupational Program

Student must get paperwork from Career Center to begin enrollment process. Cost of classes are free for high school students.

Concurrent Community College Enrollment 3 college units = 10 credits
  • Classes taken through Skyline College, College of San Mateo, or another community college
Get application paperwork from the Career Center to apply. Must have a 2.0 GPA and approval from Guidance Counselor in order to enroll.
Outdoor Education Counselor 1 week = 5 credits
  • Volunteer as a counselor for middle school students in an outdoor education setting
Get paperwork from the Career Center to apply. Selection is subject to approval by administration, counselors, faculty, and staff.
