RESOURCE SPECIALIST PROGRAM/SPECIAL DAY CLASS (RSP/SDC)

Students in the RSP/SDC program receive support through a continuum of services. Two teachers provide direct instruction for students who need Special Education placement in the content areas of Math, Science, English, and Social Sciences. Students who are mainstreamed for content classes are supported in many ways. They can take tests in the Special Education classroom, or drop in assistance for particular assignments. The general education teachers know and implement the students' accommodations and modifications when necessary. The goal of the program is to provide all necessary support while encouraging students to excel in general education classes.

Special Education English focuses on expository reading and writing, and critical thinking skills. Students receive individualized instruction based on I.E.P. goals and objectives. The classroom emphasis is on vocabulary development and writing analysis.

Special Education Social Studies classes provide small group instruction in each content area. Classes include Contemporary World Studies, Modern World History, U.S. History, Government, and Economics.

Special Education Math classes are completely individualized. As students enter they are given placement tests which determine which skills are lacking. Students progress at their own pace, and receive individualized instruction daily. Classes include Algebra and Geometry.

Special Education Science is taught as Integrated Science 1-2 (Physical Science) and Integrated Science 3-4 (Life Sciences.) Students work on grade level content standards with materials that are at their level for reading. Experiments and lab time complete the curriculum.

EMOTIONALLY DISTURBED (ED)

The San Mateo Union High School District's program for Emotionally Disturbed students has been in existence for fifteen years. Students eligible for this Special Education program receive assistance with social-emotional development, functional life skills, academics and vocational education. To enable implementation, goals and objectives are developed to best meet the needs of students through their Individual Education Plans.

SKYVIEW THERAPEUTIC DAY SCHOOL (TDS)

Skyview Therapeutic Day School is a unique program that combines the resources of County Mental Health and the San Mateo Union High School District in order to meet the needs of seriously emotionally disturbed special education students. The TDS program serves as a day-treatment facility that helps students, with the support of families, develop the necessary emotional developmental skills to be successful in school and the community. These services include education, on-site psychotherapy, occupational therapy and psychiatry. Referrals to the TDS program are made through the San Mateo Union High School District office.
